ARE YOU A LEGALLY LICENSED TRANSPORT COMPANY?
Yes, Thoroughbred Transport is a member of the National Horse Carriers Association and the Federal Motor Carriers Association. We abide by all nationwide regulatory agencies.
WHEN SHOULD I CONTACT YOU FOR TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS?
The more advance notification we have the better we are able to make arrangements that are convenient for both parties. Generally, 7 days is adequate time for us to give you the most accurate date of shipping.
ARE MY HORSES INSURED WHILE IN YOUR CARE?
Each horse is insured for $2,000 during transport. Should you wish to have additional coverage please contact your personal insurance agent.
HOW MANY DRIVERS ACCOMPANY EACH TRANSPORT?
It depends on the length of trip. On long trips 2 drivers, on local and short destinations only one driver is required. We do not have attendants who travel with the animals on the van. Should you have a special request we will be happy to make every effort possible to assist you. You may send your own atttendant or groom with your horse.
WHAT EQUINE RECORDS AND/OR HEALTH PAPERS ARE NEEDED FOR TRANSPORT?
Mandatory Coggins and health certificates are required on all transports. Many states have different requirements regarding health certificates, ranging from 72 hours up to 30 days. Due to outbreaks of equine illness or disease many states periodically require other tests and/or vaccinations before entering their state. International transports require quarantine periods. Please contact our agent or office and we will assist you with all of those specific details.
WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO PREPARE MY HORSE FOR THE MOST COMFORTABLE SHIPPING?
No one knows your animal better than your Veterinarian. Always consult your own vet when making travel arrangements. However, we do suggest that you oil and hydrate horses traveling long distances.
WHAT ABOUT BANDAGING?
Our recommendation is that you do not bandage your horse, but it is your preference. Many times on long trips the bandages slip and can cause more harm than protection. If you choose bandages our staff will not adjust them, but will remove them if they appear to slip or become misplaced. In special circumstances, such as an animal requiring medical attention, arrangements can be made in advance.
BLANKETS?
We suggest you do not blanket your horse as it may slip in transit. Horses produce alot of body heat in a small area.
HORSE EQUIPMENT?
We will carry as much equipment as your horse requires.
DO DRIVERS FEED AND WATER HORSES DURING TRANSPORT?
Absolutely yes. We will always provide your horse a filled hay-net, and water them frequently throughout their trip. In most circumstances water buckets are hung in every stall, especially in warmer weather. On long trips it is beneficial to your horse if you provide alfalfa in addition to our hay. This provides nutrition that your horse is missing while traveling and helps with digestion.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU STOP DURING THE TRIP?
Generally every 4-5 hours depending on the length of the trip. Each horse is either offered fresh water or their water bucket is refilled along with hay nets.
WILL YOU LAYOVER?
Layovers are scheduled depending on the length of the trip and/or connections with other transport carriers.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN MY HORSE HAS ARRIVED?
You will be given an estimated time of departure and arrival. In addition you will be provided with an agent’s contact number.
WHAT STALL SPACE DO YOU OFFER FOR MY HORSE’S TRANSPORT?
We offer three types of space for travel:
- Single Stall – This is a very small stall for a full size horse, and we discourage its use. However we will provide this service upon your special request.
- Stall and a Half – This is the standard stall size for a full size horse.
- Box Stall – This is a safe open space similar to a stall that your horse has in a stable. Your horse is free to relax and move at his leisure. We strongly recommend weanlings, unboken or lightly handled horses, mares with foal, and high performance horses to travel in a box stall. It is less stressful and a safer form of travel for your horse.
